Gemiverse (2022)

This chair continues a series that began as an exploration of the intersection between geometry and geology, merging science and nature through design. The piece showcases a metal structure built from geometric forms, paired with clusters of ‘rock’ elements containing mythical and alien-like geological features.

Drawing inspiration from science fiction, the chair speculates on the possibility of discovering new materials in the universe, evoking a sense of wonder about the boundaries of material science. This led to the Gemiverse, a growing collection of objects that immerse the user in Gemma’s world of speculative materiality, where innovation meets imagination.

Through careful material research, the steel frame was selected for its strength and versatility, while ceramic, epoxy, tin, sand, concrete, and thermoplastic elements were incorporated for their unique textural contrasts and ability to evoke the alien and geological influences central to the piece’s concept. The recycled materials further underscore a commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness in design.

The chair was exhibited during Milan Design Week 2022 at the Isola Design District, where it engaged audiences with its narrative of material exploration and futuristic design.
